From Wasting Fortunes on Former Miss Kenya to Witchcraft, The Fall and Fall of Danson Mungatana

Whisper the name Danson Mungatana and eyebrows will perk, ears will twitch- especially if you drop the name among those who have lived enough to witness the circus cum jamboree that is Kenyan politics since 2002

A youthful lawyer and fiery politician at the acme of his career, his dalliance with the famous Narc-Kenya-turned-The National Alliance party tells of a shrewd strategist and was the convener of the first eight people who used to meet at the Hotel Boulevard to plan the formation of Narc-Kenya.

Once a high-flying, youthful Assistant Minister and now a fraud suspect, Danson Mungatana’s life is a classic case of class to crass.

Mungatana was thrust into the national limelight after the dramatic 2002 elections.

The ease with which Swahili syllables danced on his tongue made him a favorite, especially among the media who regularly hosted him.

His cameo role at the late Vice-President Wamalwa Kijana’s colorful wedding to Yvonne Nambia after the 2002 polls as a groom’s man cemented his place in the minds of many.

Mungatana has served as an Assistant Minister in the ministries of Lands, Medical Services, Foreign Affairs, and Provincial Administration and Internal Security.

President Uhuru Kenyatta in January 2014 appointed him to chair Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) board, taking over from Shukri Barmadi. He did not last long on the key job.

Uhuru revoked his appointment only after six months in unclear circumstances.

Since then, fortunes have dramatically changed for the self-styled “crocodile-eater” who got the name for taunting Raila Odinga to a political contest where he chest-thumped that Raila the fish-eater will have to face a crocodile meat devourer.

But, when did the rain start beating the Coast politician?

Last year the former Garsen MP was arrested at a city hotel for allegedly obtaining money by false pretenses.

The DCI reported that Mungatana was arrested together with Mr. Collins Paul Waweru after a woman presented documents purported to have originated from them but were found to be fake after scrutiny.

According to the police, the former legislator was implicated in a scheme to defraud a woman under the guise of facilitating her being awarded a tender.

The businesswoman claimed a person who had identified himself as a senior military officer at the DOD had given her the documents and said he was in a position to help her win a Sh70-million cereals supply and building tender.

Mungatana, in April 2019, was arrested by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for which police alleged was the loss of Sh51 million by the Kilifi County Government.

He was arrested alongside six other people, among them four Kilifi County Government officials and two business people.

They faced charges of fraudulent acquisition of public property, uttering false documents, and dealing with proceeds of crime.

In 2018, the University of Nairobi-trained lawyer lost Sh76 million to “wash-wash” conmen from West Africa who had promised to use magic(sorcery) to multiply his money and make him a billionaire.

Mungatana woes are reportedly because of greed and women.

Before all the women, he was married to Violet Wairimu Mungatana, his first wife who succumbed while undergoing dialysis at the Coptic hospital.

Mrs. Mungatana who was known to close friends and family as Mama Elsie had been admitted to the facility for a month.

Deputy President William Ruto led Kenyan leaders in eulogizing the late Violet as a kind, devoted family woman who stood out for her warm heart.

A source who knew the couple said that they were then running a law firm in Mombasa before the money started coming in and accusations of affairs began creating cracks.

“Wairimu was once instrumental in the running of the Mungatana’s Company Advocates in Mombasa before and after Mungatana was elected MP,” a close friend told was once quoted by The Nairobian.

Wairimu then traveled to Europe and came back to Kenyan after a couple of years.

“When she came back, Mungatana wasn’t yet married but his parents really loved Wairimu so they accepted her back into their family, even though Mungatana went ahead and married TV Journalist Mwanaisha Chidzuga as a second wife.

While with Chidzuga, Mungatana went for former Beauty queen and Miss Kenya Cecilia Mwangi.

When he began having money problems, she kicked him out

“A lot of people have been pestering me, always asking me where my baby-daddy was. It’s now time, to tell the truth. I have never had the perfect answer to that question and I always tell them to go and ask him themselves where he’s been,” Cecilia said. “As a matter of fact, however, we already ended our relationship and went our separate ways over a year ago. There were no scuffles prior to our decision. We simply sat down like two mature adults, had a sober talk, and decided to part ways.”

She said the decision to call it quits was necessary to allow them to have “peace of mind”, both socially and in business.

“Personally, I felt was at a stage where I needed back some peace of mind. We no longer communicate. No phone calls, no messaging… Nothing at all. We now live our separate lives. We don’t even share responsibilities for my daughter. I am a hard-working and responsible lady, capable of taking care of her needs to the fullest.”

Soon, he was back begging Chidzuga

The former K24 anchor revealed her husband came crawling back to her begging to be taken back after he was dumped by Cecilia. Chidzuga told Massawe that she felt pity for her husband when he begged her for forgiveness after being dumped by Cecilia.

“I am not perfect, he’s not perfect. If a man comes to you akuambie ‘I have made a mistake and I am sorry. Help me sort this issue up.’ Like genuinely sorry and you can see he’s working so hard to correct the mistakes he has done, he deserves a second chance.” Said Chidzuga during the interview with Massawe Japanni.

Two days before Mungatana was arrested last year, she had gushed over him online

“Mume wangu mzuri you are 50yrs old today. Thank you for being my pillar of strength the love of my life and for your unconditional support. We love you and cheers to the next chapter of your life. One day will tell our story Inshallah. Much Blessings #50looksgoodonyou,” Chidzuga said.

Two days later, Mungatana was arrested and social media users flood her page with mocking messages.

The move forced Chidzuga to pull down the post and several other posts where she had shared photos of Mungatana.
